SnakeOil plus Extra Tips=100 extra miles
In this Newsletter I'm going to share how my 2002 Honda Accord sedan gained 100 miles per tank range on in-town driving using SnakeOil products and some cool Extra mods!
For years I've been sharing proven Extra things we can do to improve economy on our vehicles.
Ron Hatton bought this 2002 Honda Accord in Summer 2020 when he was staying here in Reno. He gave it to me before he went to Montana that winter. Thanks Ron! It does not yet have the Gadgetman Groove or the Interjectors installed.
We used Snake Oil to treat the engine, power steering, cooling system and fuel system. It started running better right away. Power, already decent, improved, along with throttle response.
So, to start with, this Honda got 300-320 miles per tank of gas.
Engine and fuel system have each been Snake Oil treated twice in 3 years. This car was a well-used Mom's car with high school teenager use added. Not badly abused, not well-loved either. Knowing Honda's reputation for longevity, I kept doing maintenance and needed repairs. There are necessary maintenance and repairs -- then there are these Extra tips mods I'm speaking of. The Extra mods might be as part of needed maintenance, like replacing tires or spark plugs when necessary, so you pick a “better” part to use. Or it's something you learn of and decide to try along with the “necessary” repairs.
I replaced the tires for a set of Falken's, picked because of the 51 LB max pressure rating. Set at 51 pounds cold, the car can coast to a red light for blocks now. Much less rolling resistance!
Then, our good friend Mike Holler ( A SERIOUS guru!) gifted me a set of zero-resistance spark plug wires. These made the engine run very smooth, and the exhaust tone deepened. (That's a subtle hint of better combustion.) Mike told me, of the “trick” of adding ground wires to the exhaust pipe, to remove subtle resistance to exhaust flow and improve O2 sensor performance.
Mike, and Ron Hatton years back, reminded me of the second exhaust “trick” of adding special high temp rated steam pipe insulation to the exhaust pipes. This special inexpensive insulation keeps heat inside the exhaust pipes, improving exhaust scavenging. Keeping heat IN the exhaust pipes, is also believed to improve downstream O2 sensor performance.
So, last fall, I added 4 ground wires along the Honda's exhaust system, between the pipes and the underside body metal. I then bought and installed the special steam pipe insulation from https://buyinsulationproducts.com. This insulation along with the extra roll of the special white tape was added over the exhaust pipe for almost the whole length, but not on the catalytic converters or muffler. The white tape is used to join sections where cuts are made over curves, etc.
The exhaust grounds and insulation I view as Supporting Players in the whole scheme of things. The different Extra mods all have interplay between them and each one supports the others. These Extra mods can be done one at a time, in any order, as time/resources allow.
Then I bought and ordered Pulstar spark plugs to replace the stock ones. It was running fine on stock plugs, no misfires. These Pulstar Plasma spark plugs are something else. Starting time is half of before. Throttle response is now razor-sharp, and I now have to keep my foot OUT of the throttle to avoid excess braking in traffic. Power is up considerably, and these helped MPG without any doubt.

After doing all these things, I bought and added a can of Berrymans B12 Chemtool fuel system cleaner to the Accord's empty tank and filled up with a Top Tier rated brand of regular gas. This seems to have been the Cherry on Top for the Accord. This was back in early June. I did maybe just a few miles on the freeway on this tank, all the rest in stop/go traffic in town. I DO use driving technique with this car. It has so little rolling resistance, and the power is so good that I can be careful on the throttle most of the time. This car just wants to GO. |
This tank of gas lasted and lasted, and finally yielded 421 miles before refilling. WOW.
And this is not some de-tuned econo-slug car with its teeth pulled out to gain MPG.
Nope - this old Mom's car will burn rubber and get Right With It if you ask it to.
This 2002 Honda Accord 4 door sedan proves you can have both economy AND Power TOO!
SnakeOil is the foundation for success here. If you stayed this far with me, I hope you got something out of it. Snake Oil works Every Time.
So do the Extra tips spoken of here, and printed out in every order for YOU to try!
Thank you, until next time!
